Sacred Sounds: Where Music Meets Faith

We explore the beauty, history, and spiritual significance of sacred music at Holy Name Cathedral. From ancient Gregorian chant to the magnificent sounds of our Flentrop Organ, Steinway Piano, and Cathedral choirs, each feature offers a deeper understanding of how music enriches our worship, elevates our prayer, and accompanies us on our journey of discipleship.

A Requiem to Remember: Music of Maurice Duruflé

On Monday, Nov. 2, at 5:15pm, Holy Name Cathedral will celebrate All Souls Day with a special Mass of Remembrance honoring those who have died during the past year. Our Cathedral choir will offer a remarkable musical tribute: the complete Requiem by French composer Maurice Duruflé (1902–1986).

Considered one of the great masterpieces of sacred choral music, Duruflé’s Requiem weaves ancient Gregorian chant melodies into rich, expressive harmonies. Its extraordinary organ accompaniment is among the most technically demanding in the repertoire.

For our Director of Music and Organist, David Jonies, this composition holds a particularly meaningful connection.

“My improvisation teacher in Germany was a student of Duruflé himself. Through his lessons, he shared with me many of the musical insights and performance traditions he had learned directly from the composer. Because of this personal connection, Duruflé’s Requiem has always held a special place in my heart.”

We invite you to join us for this beautiful expression of faith, remembrance, and the hope of eternal life, brought to life through the extraordinary musical gifts of our Cathedral musicians.
