Help Those in Need for World Day of the Poor

Pray – Give – Serve: Putting Our Faith into Action, Nov. 7 to 15

Each year, the Catholic Church observes World Day of the Poor, inviting us to recognize the dignity of those living in poverty and respond with compassion, generosity, and love. This year’s theme, chosen by Pope Leo XIV, is “The Lord is the refuge of the poor” (Psalm 14:6), reminding us that we are called to be instruments of God’s care for those most in need.

At Holy Name Cathedral, we put our faith intoaction by preparing Winter Care Packs for our neighbors experiencing homelessness and hardship. These packs will include personal hygiene essentials, gift cards, warm winter accessories, and handmade hats lovingly created by our Knitting and Crocheting Ministry. We will also partner with Lawson House, which provides housing for individuals transitioning from homelessness, for a special Day of Service on Nov. 14.

We invite our Faith Community to participate in three meaningful ways:

PRAY

Remember in your prayers those experiencing poverty, homelessness, and housing insecurity, especially as Chicago’s cold winter approaches.

GIVE

Make a donation before or after Masses on Nov. 7-8 in the Cathedral Vestibule. Your generosity, combined with support from the Cathedral, will help purchase essential items for our Winter Care Packs.

SERVE

On Saturday, Nov. 14, from 10:00am–2:00pm, join us at Lawson House for a Day of Service. Volunteers will assemble Winter Care Packs and support Lawson House’s Fall Festival with a clothing bazaar, resident craft booths, food and beverages, and distribution of essential items.

On Sunday, Nov. 15, World Day of the Poor, the Winter Care Packs will be brought to the 10:30am Mass for a blessing by Fr. Greg before being distributed to people experiencing homelessness in the neighborhoods surrounding the Cathedral. Additional packs will be shared with Lawson House residents.

Volunteers are also needed to assist with the Nov. 7–8 collection. Through prayer, generosity, and service, we can bring warmth, dignity and hope to our neighbors in need.
