History of the Cathedral

Our History

Holy Name Cathedral is both a parish and the seat of the Archdiocese of Chicago. It is the Mother church for Chicago Catholics. Our Pastor is Cardinal Blase Cupich, the Archbishop of Chicago, and our Rector is the Very Reverend Greg Sakowicz.

It has grown from a parish in a small wooden church built under extreme hardship to today’s flourishing, urban community. Today, Holy Name Cathedral’s Faith Community is diverse in the ages of its parishioners, their ethnicity, their economic status, and its many activities, which grow from its dual role.
