Ministry of Care

Ministry of Care (this ministry is currently on hiatus due to COVID)

Ministers of Care visit Catholics who are in a healthcare facility or who are home-bound. They offer compassion, a listening presence, prayer, and the Eucharist. This ministry allows people to experience the nearness of God and the Christian community through the presence of the Minister of Care and through the reception of Holy Communion.

Ministers of Care visit people in their homes or at one of the following healthcare facilities:

  • Northwestern Memorial Hospital
  • Prentice Women’s Hospital
  • Shirley Ryan Ability Lab
  • Warren Barr Pavilion

Volunteering is done on a weekly basis or on alternating weeks for approximately two hours each time. Initial training and continuing education is provided.

Training is provided for all new and returning ministers

Training will be provided as the Ministry of Care is able to resume at our local healthcare facilities. Topics include: 1) Spirituality of the Minister, 2) Theology of Suffering and Sickness, 3) Experience of Suffering, 4) Pastoral Listening Skills, 5) Ministerial and Hospital Procedures and 6) Prayer and Sacraments.

If you feel called to this special ministry of compassion, please contact Lori Doyle or 312-573-4425 , Director of Pastoral Care, for more information and application.
